The City of Hermosa Beach was incorporated in 1907, and in 1908, E.L. Ferriel was elected to be the city Marshal by a vote of 88. This gave the new police department just one employee. The Chief of Police who held the office the longest in the history of the department was William H. Berlin (1957-1975), for 12 years. Today, the Hermosa Beach Police Department has a total of 39 sworn personnel, which include: a Chief of Police, one Captain, two Lieutenants, eight Sergeants, and 27 officers.The Hermosa Beach Jail is quite small but can hold about 20 inmates. Usually, inmates will only be detained at this jail for no more than 2 days. Anyone arrested here who has not been bailed out will most likely be transferred to a Los Angeles County Jail. The bail process can take many, many hours, so this is why you want to start the bail process as early as possible.
The bail process tends to vary according to each situation in the Hermosa Beach Police Department, so once we post a bond, we just have to wait in the lobby until the jailer gives us the OK when all the paperwork has been completed and they are ready to release the inmate. Once we get the approval, the inmate will usually be released from the side of the building.
There is a parking lot outside the police station, but it fills up very quickly, particularly on the weekends, so finding parking on the street in a designated area is recommended.

From the 405 Freeway north or south, take Exit 40/Artesia and make a right onto Artesia Blvd heading toward the ocean. Turn left onto CA-1 south (Sepulveda Blvd/Pacific Coast Highway), then make a right turn onto Pier Avenue, and the Hermosa Beach Police Department will be on the left.
From local streets, travelling north or south, take CA-1 (Sepulveda Blvd/Pacific Coast Highway) to Pier Avenue and make a right or left onto Pier toward the ocean. The Hermosa Beach Police Department will be on the left. Hermosa Beach
